Based on Indian philosophy, yoga has far-reaching effects. And one of them is its ability to impact the sleep cycle. So, let us delve into the intricacies of how yoga impacts sleep.

Which Yoga Forms Impact Sleep – Yoga Teacher Training In Rishikesh

There are several different types of yoga forms. And some are better than others, in regulating sleep cycles. Moreover, there are different asanas or poses, which help you to sleep. There are high intensity yoga routines and low intensity yoga routines. Each one has the ability to impact sleep cycles, in a particular manner. The breathing techniques and meditative state are associated with your sleep cycles as well. You can engage in high-activity yoga routines in the day time, and restorative yoga routines before going to bed.

Here are two most important forms for restful sleep and for those who suffer from insomnia.

  • Hatha Yoga – It is a beginner level yoga form, which mainly stabilizes and strengthens. But that is only half the story. You are practicing various poses along with breath control techniques, as a part of this yoga practice. The form mainly focuses on inhalation, exhalation, and retention of breath. You get to relax after a round of Hatha Yoga practice.
  • Yin Yoga – This is a restorative yoga form, which allows one to get restful sleep. While you cannot replace stress and tension from your life completely, you can learn to manage it well. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep is non-negotiable. But, some people have insomnia and related illnesses, which make it difficult for them to sleep. Yin yoga is a slow-paced yoga form, which leads to deep stretching of the muscles. Your connective tissues and fascia are impacted as a result. In this yoga form, you must engage in long holds, which help in restoration of the core tissues. Your nervous system gets relaxed and you are able to sleep properly.
  • Yoga Nidra – This is an ancient relaxation modality, which utilizes guided mental imagery for relaxation. The position which you will take up is Corpse pose or Savasana. Also called Yogic sleep, you are made to enter a state of relaxation similar to sleep, but you will be conscious of the surroundings. The brain waves slow down, and lead to relaxation. However, one practicing it, remains conscious and aware of everything that happens around him. You can also compare it to meditation. Some yogis and experts in yoga also consider Yoga Nidra as a type of meditation. It removes stress and anxiety, apart from improving your mood, and helps in regular sleep cycles.

How Does Yoga Make You Fall Asleep?

Here are the ways in which yoga can lead to good sleep.

  • Yoga creates mindfulness and awareness. It also increases melatonin levels, and reduces disturbances while you sleep. When you start practicing yoga, you tend to sleep deeply.
  • Breath awareness is a very important tool, which leads to calming of the nervous system and good sleep.
  • Yoga is also a physical activity, which can tire you. Thus, you sleep well, after practicing yoga for some time.

Which Yoga Poses Should You Practice For Sleep At Night?

When you join the best 200 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, you get complete knowledge about these poses. For now, you can refer to the below poses to jumpstart your practice.

  • Uttanasana – This is a very gentle yoga pose, in which you need to stand and then slowly bend down from the hips. You must touch the feet or the shins. It is important for you to not round the back, as it may lead to spinal discomfort. These intricacies are taught as a part of the yoga TTC in Rishikesh.
  • Supta Baddha Konasana – You have to lie down on your back. Bring the soles of the feet together as you would do in the regular Baddha konasana. The knees must drop on either side. You can rest both your hands on either side of the body or above the head, stretched out.
  • Viparit Karanai Asana – This is the legs up on the wall pose, which is extremely beneficial for good sleep. You can even practice it while lying on the bed. You simply have to lie on your back, and raise both the legs against a fixed structure like the wall. The body forms an L-shaped structure. You can rest both the arms comfortably on either side.
  • Savasana – It is one of the poses which people do at the end of a yoga session. You simply have to lie down, without bothering about anything.
  • Ananda Balasana – This is another pose, which you can practice around bed time. Lie down on a comfortable spot, or on a mat. Lift the legs and pull them towards your chest. The knees should be in contact with the chest. You can hold your feet or your ankles. Hold the pose for some time, or rock yourself in the pose. Both ways, it is beneficial.

Conclusion
